The Cockeyed Gull Restaurant
About This Spot
Perched gracefully on Peaks Island’s shoreline, The Cockeyed Gull Restaurant welcomes you with a gentle sea breeze and a sense of quiet arrival. As you step inside, the pace slows just enough to let you soak in a laid-back yet thoughtfully curated mood — one where the charm of island life settles in with the sound of friendly conversations and the clink of glasses from the intimate bar. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike find a refuge from the everyday, collected around moments that feel easy and unhurried.
This is more than just a seafood spot; it’s a gathering where the Atlantic’s bounty is celebrated in seasonally inspired dishes crafted with care and a touch of unexpected flair. Whether you’re perched at the outdoor balcony soaking in one of Peaks Island’s best views or nestled indoors amid warm wood tones and subtle nautical touches, each plate tells a story of freshness and thoughtful balance. The flavors—like a perfectly seared scallop or a lobster roll with just the right hint of lemon aioli—carry a familiar comfort yet surprise the tongue with interesting twists, making each bite a small discovery.
The bar here is equally inviting, with drinks that flirt with classic roots and island palettes—a fresh tequila sunrise blending grapefruit notes feels as much a part of the setting as the ocean air. Behind every dish and drink, there is a quiet kindness that reveals itself through staff who are genuine and attentive without ever rushing the experience. Patrons often find themselves drawn to the layers of hospitality here—the kind that can only come from a place steeped in community and pride for its place on the water.
The Cockeyed Gull is an island story, told by the crackle of a hearty chowder, the savory depth of smoked salmon, and the subtle sweetness of house-made truffles. It’s where culinary craft meets the simplicity of seaside life, leaving guests with a vivid sense of place and a quietly joyful experience that lingers long after the last bite.

I do not typically write reviews on Google, but our experience at the Cockeyed Gull was so exceptional that I had to let everyone know! We had an amazing experience at the cockeyed gull on Saturday, July 13th. Trust me when I say I have not had a seafood meal this delicious since our trip to Sicily. Spontaneously, we decided to visit Peak Island on our trip to Maine. The frogs decorated around the restaurant were absolutely adorable. We loved the meditating frog outside of their beautiful pollinator and vegetable garden surrounding the property. We made a reservation for 7:45, and they kindly seated us 20 minutes early. Our server Christian was highly attentive throughout the entirety of our dining experience. He always made sure that we were taken care of and our water was full. He spoke highly about the restaurant as well as our choices for food. We started with the little neck clams cooked in what was possibly the best broth we’ve ever tasted. We did not leave a single drop. Our minds were blown instantly. My main course was a linguine with cilantro butter sea scallops, and my husband chose the wasabi pea encrusted halibut. Both were to die for. The breading was the perfect amount on the halibut and it stayed on perfectly. We were full from the appetizer and entrees but we were curious about the carrot cake. Christian insisted that we should not miss trying it and that it was the best carrot cake he has ever had. After trying the decadent cake, we agreed. The three layer carrot cake was out of this world. No carrot cake we’ve ever had could compare. The view of the sunset over Portland’s skyline was picture perfect. We couldn’t believe that we had never heard of this place! To top it off, we left our credit card at the restaurant and they kindly offered to mail it back! Needless to say, this restaurant will be a staple in our itinerary each time we have friends and family come to visit Portland. We would give it a 10/5 if we could!

The food here is DELICIOUS!!! One of the best views in Peaks Island off the outdoor balcony deck. We ordered the cucumber salad, the salmon and the scallops. For dessert the carrot cake - which you could taste it wasnt store bought, but rather made with love - and chocolate balls. Everything was amazing, but especially the scallops. Our server was also very kind and friendly. Don’t let the lack of curb appeal fool you, this is a must stop hidden gem. PS: I noticed you guys only respond (hilariously) to the negative reviews (I hope to receive a comment from THE Cockeyed Gull Restaurant)

I, a solo diner made my way across the Atlantic to try a Halibut (Pistachio and Wasabi Pea encrusted topped with a Jalapeno Beurre Blanc and Asian Pear and Jicama Slaw, over rice) I have been hearing about. I was able to snag the last of the oh so popular dish. Presentation, Beautiful. This dish was so well executed I felt like Maneet Chauhan as a judge on Chopped explaining all the depths of flavor this dish had. It was nothing I have ever tasted before. This family owned and operated restaurant takes pride in what they provide for the locals and island visitors. Come out and enjoy a distinctive dining experience unique to the area that has a kitchen crafted with true culinary expertise.

Arguably the most upscale restaurant on the island. It is rather small so depending on when you go it may be difficult to get a table. As with all the other places on the island, it is subject to having low stock or availability of various foods, which was the case for us. There was a large group eating dinner at the same time and they were out of the steak, haddock and lobster when we went to order. My wife was very impressed with her scallop scampi and the server was pleasant and prompt. Check with the restaurant on the night you want to eat as hours of operation seem to vary online versus in reality.

This little diamond in the ruff is everything I love about Maine! Vacationing with family and they brought me to the island for this wonderful little ocean front cafe! I cannot wait to go back! Everything about this place was wonderful. We were there in the off season so crowd control was awesome! The view was still stunning and the folks that work here are wonderful! Food was great! We ordered so many different foods and all of them were excellent!

Well, the rumors are true; best food on Peaks Island is at Cockeyed Gull! I had the sesame crusted Faroe Island Salmon topped with Cilantro Aioli, rice and seaweed salad, Mike had Lamb Chops, fried asparagus and roasted potatoes. Both were yummy! Wine was great and I’m waiting for the homemade carrot cake…oops! Dug right in before taking the photo! Carrot cake does not disappoint; super heavy and moist with amazingly rich cream icing!

Our server Christian was so welcoming! They were able to get us a table without a reservation (next time we will call ahead) and as a back up we could have sat at the bar but we loved our waterview. My tequila cosmo and my aunts negroni were mixed perfectly. Then OMG our entrees were so delicious (Lamb & Lobster Linguini) we were sharing off each other's plates. Thank you!
